UCT representing in Vodacom Cup

Saturday 30 April is the Vodacom Cup quarter final meeting between Western Province and the Sharks XV, and what's most exciting is the number of Varsity Cup players in the squad!

Ikey Tigers in the 22 for tomorrow include Marcel Brache at fullback, Tim Whitehead at replacement centre and Hilton Lobberts at replacement forward. And as all rugby fans wait with baited breath to hear whether Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant will be announced fit enough for the Super XV game, having him rested this weekend would not be SUCH a bad thing from a UCT point of view. If Grant is not declared fit the various shuffle-ups will result in our own flyhalf extraordinaire Demetri Catrakilis making his debut for the Western Province Vodacom Cup team!

Catrakilis won the man of the match award in Ikeys victorious Varsity Cup final this month, and was also leading points scorer in the tournament with 136 points (16 from the final alone!).

Go the Greek!

Battle in the Rain

Not only did the UCT Mens First Team Hockey take on Maties on Tuesday night (26 April) but they also had some epic winter weather to fight against. Rain poured down, the wind blew and still our UCT warriors raged on.

The battle between the two arch rivals ended in a 2-2 draw - with maybe Mother Nature being the real winner of the evening.

It was however great to see the number of UCT (and a few Maties) fans who braved the storm and came to support their teams. Also really cool to have bumped into some of the first team rugby and soccer players supporting their hockey counterparts. Guess not even Mother Nature can win against our indomitable blue and white love.

Results from the Two Oceans Marathon

Congratulations to all the UCT current students and alumni who took part in the Two Oceans half marathon or ultra marathon on Saturday 23 April 2011.

The UCT Athletics Club got some really great times with many athletes gaining personal bests.

The women’s half marathon team came second. The were only beaten by the professional team from Nedbank CGA, which included the defending champion Rene Kalmer, who is also a 30-time national champion over various distances.
The men’s team came third, also behind a professional team.
Lauren Stewart, back from London for the race, finished 11th. Nelson Bass was 19th and also completed his 10th half.

In the ultra we had a good turn out. Will Robinson broke 4 hours, with a time of 3:44:04. Andrzej Okreglicki ran his 10th consecutive Two Oceans Ultra. Jennifer Kithinji ran a respectable 5:54.28.

Hockey declares battle on Maties - Tues Night 26 April

The UCT Men's Hockey 1st Team will wage war on the field come Tuesday night, when they host arch rivals from the land of Stellenbosch - the Maties.

The game is at 20h30 on the UCT Astro with the following day (Wednesday) conveniently a public holiday. The hockey club in their usual hospitable fashion have teamed up with the UCT Film Society and organised a little post-match shindig.

More info can be found on the Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=165912956798753

See you there in your blue & white!

A tough Wednesday night

Wednesday 20 April saw the rugby club and the soccer club with big fixtures.

The rugga boys took on formidable club, Hamiltons. The Ikey Tigers, playing their fourth game in two weeks, outscored Hamiltons three tries to two but still went down 23-15. Find a review of the game here: http://tinyurl.com/5sdnrse

The boys now have a break until May 7, followed by the biggie: Intervarsity in Stellenbosch on May 14.

In the soccer, the Ladies faired the best drawing to UWC 2-2. Playing at home on the Kopano Astro, their game was followed by the UCT Men's 1st Team, who unfortunately went down 1-2 to a strong UWC side.

Both teams will take on UCT rivals Stellenbosch on Wednesday 27 April (Freedom Day) during the day. Games are being played at UWC B with the Women's 1st Team kicking off at 10am and the Men's 1st Team at 12h00.

We will always remember UCT's Golden Age

By Anton Taylor

At one point or another, everybody feels like a loser. It comes to you at certain times; an ebbing suspicion which creeps in to your mind and tells you that you are just one of those people who will never get it right. It is a desperate, sinking feeling which pulls you under and orders you to give in. It is the lump in your throat and the burning of your eyes when, despite trying so terribly hard, your journey ends in defeat.

Everybody has felt this way. Anybody who says otherwise is either lying or so insecure that any form of self-examination is impossible to them, lest they glimpse the ocean of fear and shame flowing within them.

The strange thing is that while everybody has felt like a loser, not everybody is in fact a loser. Certainly, there are losers in this world. They are the scared ones: those who would give in and accept the mean words of the bullies. It's the people who ignore those bitter put-downs, who ignore all the past failures and strive forward, who are winners. But doing so is difficult and tiring, and for many of us events happen through life which make us forget how good thing can be.

Every now and then, however, something happens which reminds us that we can be the guys and girls who get everything they want. Last Monday, after years of battling, as the Ikeys lifted the Varsity Cup trophy, thousands of us felt like those good-looking popular people who get it all. Who win. And we should feel like that. Because we do have it all, and God knows, we possibly deserve it.

Although they deserve the utmost credit for their achievement, the Ikeys victory does not belong to the rugby club. It belongs to all of us. For it was all of us who created the belief that has spread into every facet of UCT living. It was all of us who loved UCT so much that we were willing, year after year, to once again risk that fierce pain of disappointment and give all our hearts to the hope that we could win.

You see, the reason we are winners is not because we have the Varsity Cup. It is because despite the years of coming so close and failing we believed that we could have it all. Winning last Monday just makes it easier for us to see what we have always been.

No matter what happens to us in the rest of our lives, no matter how we've felt about ourselves before this point, there is one fact which we should never forget: there was a time when we were truly at one of the best places in the world. Where we were at one of those unattainable places you'd see in movies, with the triumphant sports teams, top academics, insane parties, impossibly beautiful settings and an unrealistic number of good-looking students. We belonged to a Golden Place during a Golden Age, and there is nothing that anybody can do to ever take that away.

There is a great deal of sadness and suffering in the world, but sometimes there is happiness without pain and triumph without sorrow. And for this time, we are those lucky few who can have it all. Let us never forget this feeling.

Fencing doing us proud!

UCT Fencing competed in the KZN Open hosted by UKZN this past weekend.

Day one saw Michael Malahe finishing 3rd in the Men's Epee - losing 15-11 to former Olympian Sello Maduma. Giselle Vicatos then finished 2nd in the Women's Foil final.

On day two, Skye Pym-Siljuer finished 5th in the Senior Men's foil; with Giselle Vicatos earning top honours by winning GOLD in the Senior Women's Epee event, having to knock out the entire SA squad and a fencer from the USA on her road to victory!

Well done fencing! And to the rest of the universities we say, "en garde"!
