Ikeys end Round 1 second on Log!

The Ikey Tigers ended Round 1 of their WP Super League season with an 8 try victory over neighbouring club Villagers.

The action went down on the Green Mile on Saturday afternoon, and saw two tries from Therlow 'Puppy' Pietersen (playing at centre) as well as debutant winger Richard Stuard. Ikey veteran JJ Gagiano joined them in the ranks of double trouble managing to get his two in a brief 20min appearance.

Paul Cohen on the wing score one Ikeys try as well as securing four conversions and a penalty for the home team, with Nick Holton adding the two other conversions.

The final score was an epic 55-20 to the Blue and White dream team that has had one of their best seasons ever for UCT. A post match celebration showed the silverwear already won only half way into season - including the Varsity Cup Trophy and the Intervarsity bling amongst others.

The Ikeys finish round one high up on the log - after this weeks fixtures only below Maties. Their next game will be on 30 July vs SK Walmers.

Ikey Tigers reclaim the Mark Jordaan Memorial Trophy

After their emphatic victory against Maties last weekend, the Ikey Tigers faced another big clash this past Saturday against False Bay in Constantia. A fair crowd came out in the berg weather to see which Southern Suburbs team would claim the Mark Jordaan Memorial Trophy.

A scrappy game, the scores remained tight in the first half with Ikeys inside centre, Nick Holton, scoring the only try in those first 40 min. Ikeys went into the break with a 16 - 12 lead and things opened up a bit more in the second half for the blue and white storm as they claimed a 36 - 22 victory at full time.

They Ikey Tigers play their last Round 1 fixture next Saturday, 28 May, against Villagers on the Green Mile. Kickoff is at 4pm with rugby being played on the ground from 13h30.

UCT fencers represent at Olympic Qualifier in South Korea

Three fencers have been selected to represent South Africa at the men’s foil World Cup in Seoul, South Korea this weekend. They are Jacques Viljoen (UCT), Jarryd New (CPUT) and Skye Pym-Siljuer (UCT). These three fencers have also been selected for the World Student Games later this year.

The competition is the first team world cup of the Olympic qualification season. To qualify, South Africa must be ranked 1st in Africa and in the top 16 in the world. The team was ranked 15th in the world last year but dropped to 20th after missing the first half of the 2011 season due to lack of funding.

To keep up-to-date on Fencing news, check out the UCT Fencing Club website: http://www.uctfencing.co.za/

Good Luck boys!

Soccer Results

UCT Soccer Club has been dominating of late in their fixtures.

Last Saturday the 1st Men beat Muizenberg FC 3-1, 2nd Men beat Stephanian Ottery B 1-0 and the 3rd Men beat Garlandale 6-0. Then on Sunday the 1st men beat Ashford Athletic 2-1

The Ladies 1st Team lost their first league game on Friday 3-2 against Durbanville, but I'm sure they'll bounce back to the force they've been this season! They have a huge USSA fixture tomorrow (Wednesday 18 May) against
CPUT. Game kicks off at 7pm on the Astro.

Hockey Update

The hockey season is well on it's way, and UCT has 14 teams competing externally.

Both the Mens 1sts and 2nds are playing in the Mens Grand Challenge. Maties 1st are currently topping the log with 19 points and UCT 1st are at number three with 14 points. Neither team has lost a game this season, and drew 2-2 to each other last month - the only game Maties haven't won.

UCT Mens 2nd are in sixth place on the log with 9 points, with the Maties 2nd team (Victorians) just behind in eighth place with 8 points. There are 12 teams competing in the league.

Our 1st and 2nd Ladies teams are both competing in the Ladies Grand Challenge with our 1st team sitting third on the log with 14 points having won four out of their five games.

Both 1st Teams take on Central this Friday 20 May with the Ladies game starting at 19h00 followed by the Men at 20h30 at the UCT Astro. The 2nd Teams play on Saturday 21 May also at the UCT Astro with the Ladies 2nds taking on Conberg at 13h30 and the Mens 2nds versus CPUT at 16h30.

Be sure to pull through in your blue and white!

Intervarsity 1929

The annual rugby clash between the universities of Cape Town (Ikeys) and Stellenbosch (Maties) has a rich history dating from 1911. This game took place in Stellenbosch.

I found this photo on flicker album: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/4826676428/

Ikey Tigers Claim Intervarsity

It's a century old rivalry - one that led to the iconic naming of teams as "Ikeys" and "Maties"; and one that has never wained in passion nor support. At times it has found us feeling inspired and zealous, at others crushed and brokenhearted.

Stellenbosch Rugby has reigned supreme over the last few years, what with the Maties having won all three Varsity Cup Championships as well as the last six Intervarsities. The Ikeys faithful though continued to invest in blue paint, for they knew that a storm was brewing - and what a blue&white storm it is.

We at UCT rejoiced earlier this year when our Ikey Tigers became the first team since the Maties to lift the Varsity Cup trophy; but there was still something missing - a much craved victory over our maroon neighbours. The last time UCT pulled off a win against our rooi rivals was in a 2008 Varsity Cup match in George, with 2004 being the last time we claimed the official Intervarsity Trophy.

On Saturday May 14 2011, we reclaimed that trophy - proving to ourselves and the rest of the rugby world, that we really are the best university rugby team in the country. Playing in the heart of Maties Rugby at the Danie Craven Stadium, the Ikey Tigers fought back from a half-time score of 19-9 to end the game victorious at 19-28! The lone blue & white try was scored by Therlow Pietersen, with all other Ikey points coming off the boot of flyhalf supreme Demetri Catrakilis.

The Intervarsity match is part of the WP Super League. Maties are still top of the log with 28 points; UCT sit third on the log with 19 points having played one less game. Both teams can still qualify for the 2011 National Club Championships in Stellenbosch later this year. Maties face title Club Champs contenders Hamiltons next, with UCT 'traveling' to Constantia to take on False Bay.

Hockey showcasing the fun side of Sport Support

2011 has definitely been the year to prove that UCT is sports champions; a result of the blood, sweat and tears continuously given by our heroic sports stars. Our players without a doubt put in the hard work to get their results, but thankfully they have a "work hard, play hard" attitude to sports life.

The UCT Hockey Club are the defending Men's Champions as well as fielding 13 other competitive teams - and let's not forget the Internal Leagues providing constant entertaining clashes at our UCT Astro. Even with all the serious (and not so serious) sport going on, the club has a great gees and finds time to throw some epic jols.

Thanks to the UCT Film Society, the opening party was very well documented and can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4aAHUSrYd8

Basketball get their claws out for Fri 13th!

Friday the 13th always brings up an eerie feeling like you may end up fighting for your life... The Women's Basketball Team though will be fighting for a win in their SASSU Qualifier final against UWC.

It will all be going down at the UCT Sports Centre 1 at 18h30 Friday 13 May.

Ikeys looking strong

Ikey Tigers forward Don Armand (pictured) scored a brace of tries as the 2011 Varsity Cup champions claimed a whopping 40-10 win over WP Super League newcomers, Belhar, at Groote Schuur on Saturday.

Armand, a member of the Varsity Cup-winning team last month, scored two of the Ikeys' six tries on the day - the other five-pointers going to Zandy Macdonald, Pete Haw, Greg Mallett and Mark Winter.

Flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis, back in the UCT side after his Western Province debut last weekend in the Vodacom Cup, slotted five conversions for the students.

UCT led by 14-10 at half-time, as they played into the wind in the first half, but things opened up nicely in the second stanza with the wind at their backs.

This game was just a warm-tho for the big clash this Saturday (May 14) vs Maties in Stellenbosch

Girls Soccer Dominating

Losing 2-1 to the University of Namibia on Friday 6 May came as a bit of a shock to the Ladies 1st Team Soccer - for you see ladies and gentleman this is not a team used to losing. In fact, this friendly was the first game that the side has lost including the pre-season warm-up games.

Mentioned in a previous post was the side's 6-0 win against UCT arch rivals Maties - but it seems the team was just limbering up for the real annihilation: in the last week they've beaten Bothasig 10-0 and Tsiba College 21-0!

Can't wait to see what ridiculous score they next pull off!

Soccer vs University of Namibia

Friday night May 6 will see both the Ladies and Mens First Teams take on their counterparts from the University of Namibia at the UCT Soccer Astro.

The Ladies game kicks off first at 7pm followed by the Men's game at 8.30pm.
All UCT sports fans are encouraged to wear their blue & white and come cheer on our teams!

Hockey 4ths beat Maties 3rds

Woohoo, congrats to the UCT Men's 4th Team who dented the Maties ego by beating the Maties 3rd Team 3-1 on Monday 2 May.

Pre-game predictors were expecting our Ikeys to be dealt quite the beating, but that's not how this Blue & White team rolls. Carl Wiesner got double action with 2 goals and Alain Du Plessis joined the party with 1.

Also congrats to the guys 3rds and 5ths, and girls 4ths and 6ths on their respective wins. Looks like UCT hockey is going to have an exciting season!

Ikeys Alumnus Earning his International Stripes

Last Sunday, May 1, saw former Ikey Tigers captain Stu Commins warming the bench for the Northhampton Saints in their Heineken Cup semi-final against Perpignan.

Commins - who joined Northampton after last year's Varsity Cup Final, having been a UCT stalwart between 2008 and 2010 - wore the No.21 shirt on Sunday as he backed up starting No.9 Lee Dickson. He got a bit of game time and we at UCT are wishing him luck for the Saints final against Leinster on 21 May.

Of course, Commins is not the only former Varsity Cup player currently playing abroad. His ex-UCT teammate Mat Turner is an England Sevens international, whilst former Ikeys captain JJ Gagiano is in line to make the USA Rugby World Cup squad - having already played 11 Tests for the Eagles.

Ladies show how it's done

Freedom Day should be renamed 'The Day Maties got Thrashed by UCT'.

After some disappointing clashes with our arch rivals - losing to them 16-37 in rugby at home during the Varsity Cup, Ladies hockey suffering a loss and Men's hockey almost but not enough 2-2 draw, it was grand to see the Ladies Soccer First Team taking a Maties side to the cleaners.

Playing away from home, the game ended with what sounds more like a tennis score 0-6 to UCT!
Ana Rayn got a hatrick, with the rest of the UCT goals coming from Julia Cassar, Gina Anstey and Allison Dorey.

The team's next clash is a USSA fixture against Tsiba at Pinelands on Wednesday 4 April, before an exciting game on Friday 6 April against the University of Namibia!

Let's get some epic support together on Friday!
